Baker police receive donation to buy 2 dogs
BAKER — Police Chief Mike Knaps told the City Council on Tuesday night the Police Department received a $24,000 gift to buy two police dogs.
Knaps said the donor is a local resident who wishes to remain anonymous.
Half of the money would enable the department replace Rocky, the bomb-sniffing dog struck and killed on a road near Wakefield.
Knaps said the remaining $12,000 would go toward buying a multipurpose narcotics dog, replacing an injured narcotics-sniffing dog.
Because each of the dogs would cost $12,500, the remaining $1,000 will be paid by the city, Knaps said.
The police chief said the new bomb-sniffing dog and a Baker police officer would undergo joint training by U.S. Canine of Kaplan.
The dog would become part of the city’s police force by July 1.
“We’re very excited,” Knaps said, because there are only five such dogs in Louisiana.
On another matter, the council voted to make a counteroffer to SIDCO Real Estate Inc., a company trying to purchase the old fire station and property on Groom Road near La. 19.
Mayor Harold M. Rideau said the proposed $308,000 sale would provide an opportunity for the city to remove an eyesore.
Council members said that before signing a purchase agreement, consideration should be given to the council’s counteroffer.
That counteroffer calls for obtaining bids for site demolition costs and extending the purchase agreement until April 10.
Council members said they are concerned that the requirement calling for the city to demolish and remove all improvements on the property, including the building, slab, foundations and paved areas, might be cost-prohibitive.
The council, in addition to asking for more time to consider the deal, would seek bids for demolition costs to remove the building, slab and other improvements on the property.
