Violence in Gardere area claims one life

A 27-year-old man from El Salvador was shot and killed in his bedroom early Easter morning, capping a violent weekend for the Gardere Lane area in south Baton Rouge.
Sheriff’s deputies are looking for the intruder who burst into the bedroom of Jesus Amilcar Gutierrez in the 1700 block of Mast Drive around 1 a.m. and demanded money from him, spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said.
When Gutierrez replied that he did not have any money, the assailant shot him at point blank range before running away, Hicks said.
The East Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office pronounced Gutierrez dead at the scene, Hicks said.
Witnesses described the assailant as a light-skinned black male, 5 feet 8 inches tall and 180 pounds, Hicks said. He was wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt and black pants.
Less than 24 hours before, two Hispanic males were shot and injured in an apartment in the 8000 block of Stern Avenue, around the corner from the four-plex where Gutierrez was killed.
Hicks said that from one to three men forced their way into that apartment at around 1:26 a.m. Saturday, demanding money from those present before shooting two men.
Homicide detectives, who were up all night working Gutierrez’s case, are investigating if the two shootings are related, Hicks said.
Less than a mile away from the other incidents, a woman was attacked Saturday night with a box cutter in the 8000 block of Ned Avenue.
The victim was cut several times on the face and chest during a fight with 21-year-old Shatondra Angelette Mayfield, 21, Hicks said.
Mayfield, of 8069 Ned Ave., Apt. 6, was booked into Parish Prison early Sunday on a count of aggravated second-degree battery.
Hicks said Sheriff Sid Gautreaux has made policing the Gardere area a priority, stepping up patrols there. Deputies made more than 30 drug arrests in the neighborhood in February, she said.
