New comics to get trial runs in coming weeks

Beginning today, The Advocate will run samples of new comics on the weekday comics page.

Garry Trudeau,  who draws the Doonesbury comic strip, is taking 12 weeks off. During that time, we will run six comic strips that we do not currently run. These strips will run during the week only; we will continue to run Sunday comics from the previously run comic strips selected by Trudeau.

Editors at The Advocate selected the six strips that we will sample from a broader list of comics suggested by distributors.

The Advocate is considering replacing some of the comics it now runs. After the 12 weeks of sample comics are over, we will allow our readers to vote on which comics we should continue to run and which ones we should discontinue.

Among the comics we are considering replacing are For Better or For Worse, which is mixing some rerun strips with its new offerings; Peanuts, all of which are reruns since Charles Schultz’s death; B.C., which is no longer drawn by Johnny Hart, and the opposing political views of Doonesbury and Mallard Fillmore. We are also considering dropping the Sunday features only of Family Circus, Ziggy and Magic Eye.

The new sample comics are: Mutts, F Minus, Get Fuzzy, DeFlocked, The Knight Life and Pickles.

Please check out these sample comic strips and help us select what you want to read on our comics page.  We are also considering running Pearls before Swine, which runs only on Sunday, during the week.
