PORT ALLEN — Kites, ranging in size from small to large to enormous, will be the stars of the fourth annual Kite Fest Louisiana, but the two-day events is more than kites.

The April 4-5 festival at the West Baton Rouge Soccer Complex just outside Port Allen, consists of two distinct events, an education day April 4, and a family-oriented Saturday session April 5.

While watching kites soar, festival-goers can visit the Louisiana Food and Beverage Court.

They can listen to Classic Sounds by Jude at 4 p.m. April 5, and to Dustin Ray and Southern Groove at 7 p.m.

The West Baton Rouge Convention and Visitors Bureau coordinates the event, and will have lots of Louisiana travel information available to distribute.

On Friday, teachers and parents are encouraged to bring students and children to the festival grounds from 9 a.m. till 2 p.m.

Teachers are encouraged to make the festival a field trip. They may call the bureau at (225) 344-2920 for information. Kite-building instructions can be provided in advance, upon request.]

In addition, a random drawing from among school groups attending means that one group will receive a $500 classroom grant.
Action on Saturday, April 5, runs from 9 a.m. till 7 p.m. and may run a little later.

If the winds and weather cooperate, the Austin End of the Line Kite Team will stage a “night-flight.”

The Crescent City Kite Flyers will serve as safety and field coordinators, and will display large, colorful kites.

The schedule Saturday includes sport kite demonstrations, show kite musical ballets, a children’s kite-making workshop, a kite design competition, candy drops, races, and kite flying lessons.

The March 30 edition of The Advocate is scheduled to offer instructions on kite-making.
