St. James Council gets report on code program
VACHERIE — An official with the South Central Planning and Development Commission told the St. James Council on Wednesday the building code compliance permitting process is now running much smoother in St. James and throughout the entire region.
The building code law was adopted by the state Legislature following the 2005 hurricanes, Katrina and Rita, that heavily damaged areas of Louisiana. The code requires more stringent building codes for construction projects that must be approved by certified inspectors.
The South Central Planning and Development Commission inspects construction in St. James, Assumption, Lafourche, Terrebonne and St. John the Baptist parishes to ensure that new construction can withstand high winds.
Michael Wich, representing the commission, gave a building code compliance update.
Wich said the permitting office is operating well, inspection time has been reduced substantially and has an enviable inspector certification success rate.
On the certified inspectors, Wich said the commission has 10 inspectors fully certified in residential inspection and three certified in commercial inspection.
Wich said for residential construction, reviews take between 24 to 48 hours and the applicant is contacted within 24 hours if additional information is needed.
Council Chairman Wilson Malbrough said he remembers the large number of calls he received when the new building codes took effect, but now the calls seem to have ceased.
