Man in wheelchair escapes Zachary house fire
ZACHARY — Fire destroyed a Wagner Drive home outside the city limits Monday, but the lone occupant, who uses a wheelchair, escaped without serious injury, Fire Department officials said.
“He was very fortunate to get out,” Zachary Fire Chief Dan H. Wallis said of the occupant, “Red” Morris.
Assistant Fire Chief Glenn Triche said the Fire Department received a report at 2:27 p.m. that the house was on fire and a person was possibly trapped inside. En route to the house, off Pride-Port Hudson Road northeast of Zachary, firefighters learned that a woman had helped Morris get out of the house.
Triche said Morris told firefighters he used a kitchen match to light a cigarette and, thinking the match was extinguished, put it in an area where rubbing alcohol had been spilled.
