LAPLACE — A Baton Rouge girl was killed and 10 people were injured Sunday when a Toyota pickup traveling eastbound on Interstate 10 in St. John Parish crossed the median and crashed into two vehicles, Louisiana State Police said in a news release.

The three-vehicle wreck happened at 4:23 p.m. in the westbound lanes of I-10 near the La. 3188 exit, State Police spokesman Trooper Joseph Piglia said.

The news release also gave the following account of the accident:

The pickup crashed into the left rear passenger door of a Honda Odyssey minivan driven by Baton Rouge resident Mona N. Gary, 42. The pickup then deflected off the van and struck a Dodge Caliber driven by Steven Thomas, 37, of Baker.

A child passenger, 8-year-old Grace Gary, who was riding in the left rear position of the Honda was critically injured and taken to a hospital where she later died. Three other people in the Honda — Mona N. Gary, the driver; James Gary, 37, the front passenger; and a 5-year-old girl — suffered moderate injuries.

Three people in the Dodge — Thomas, the driver; Jessica Thomas, 25, a passenger; and a 13-year-old male passenger — suffered moderate injuries.

A 5-year-old boy in the Toyota pickup suffered serious injuries. Three other people in the Toyota — Robert Newman, the 52-year-old driver from New Orleans, Triantie Wilson, 22, a passenger, and a 8-year-old girl — suffered moderate injuries.

Troopers suspect Newman may have been impaired and crossed the median into westbound lanes without braking. They will have multiple counts pending against Newman upon his release from the hospital.
