GREENSBURG — A town hall meeting about preventing underage alcohol consumption is scheduled for the 10 a.m. Thursday gathering of the St. Helena Parish Human Services Coalition, organizers said.

The U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Heath Services Administration, the St. Helena Parish coalition and New Beginning Outreach Ministries of Greensburg are sponsoring the event at the St. Helena Health Unit, 53 N. Second St., Greensburg, organizers said in a news release.

The meeting, open to the public, is the first of five planned for the eastern Florida Parishes between March 20 and April 4, said Patricia McNeil, who serves on the St. Helena coalition.

Other meetings include the following: 10 a.m. March 27 at the Livingston Parish Literacy and Technology Center, 9261 Florida Blvd., Walker; and at noon April 4 at the state Office of Youth Development, 42381 Deluxe Plaza, Hammond.

The town halls are being held across the nation in response to a call to action about underage drinking issued by the U.S. Surgeon General’s Office.

A 2006 state Department of Education survey found 67.2 percent of St. Helena Parish 12th-graders said they drink alcohol while 13.1 percent of 12th-graders said they had been to school drunk, McNeil’s town hall invitation letter says.

In Louisiana, the legal drinking age is 21. Contact McNeil by calling (985) 517-5598 or by sending an e-mail to pam7745@yahoo.com.
