SLIDELL — A janitor has been arrested in the rapes of two 10-year-old boys in a school restroom, police said Monday.

The assaults happened in September and October during school hours at W.L. Abney Elementary School, Slidell police spokesman Capt. Kevin Foltz said Monday.

Dino Jay Schwertz, 41, 323 Robin Lane, was arrested at 1 a.m. Saturday and booked into City Jail on six counts of aggravated rape, three counts for each boy, police said in a news release.

Investigators were initially looking into a bullying incident involving the boys in November, Foltz said.

The investigation determined one boy raped the other, he said.

The boy allegedly raped by his schoolmate and the janitor told authorities only last week that the janitor raped him, Foltz said.

The boy accused of raping the other 10-year-old is facing a forcible rape charge in juvenile court, Foltz said.

The victim was transferred from Abney Elementary, he said.

Schwertz was a temporary employee at the time of the assaults, Foltz said.

In January, Schwertz was made a full-time employee and moved to Northshore High School, he said.

Foltz said records show St. Tammany Parish school system officials did a background check on Schwertz but “There was nothing (in his past) that would flag him that he would do this kind of stuff.”

Foltz said Schwertz’s criminal history involved traffic citations and worthless check charges from several year ago.

Schwertz has reportedly admitted to six rapes, three for each boy, Foltz said.
