CONVENT — The St. James Council on Wednesday amended its solid-waste collection and disposal contract with Waste Management of Louisiana LLC.

The resolution making the changes, approved without a dissenting vote, grew out of negotiations between Waste Management and Parish President Dale Hymel Jr.’s administration.

The amended contract contains rate increases for delivery, pickup, and disposal of 30 to 40 roll-off containers of residential waste within the parish.

In the past, the parish would pay a fee of $175 per container at the Vacherie and Gramercy collection sites. The new contract sets the rate at $180 per container.

However, residents who call the parish to request bins for construction and demolition jobs face paying substantially more for the rental bins.

Previously, residents would pay $175 per bin, which included delivery and pick-up. In the new contract, residents would pay $305 per bin, a $130 increase per unit.

Hymel said his office contacted numerous companies offering collection bin services without finding any with cheaper rates than Waste Management.

Hymel also said residents are not required to use Waste Management if they prefer another company.

The contract also lists new rates and conditions for collection of garbage, yard waste and bulk waste.
