A replica of the Niña, one of the three ships on Christopher Columbus’ first voyage to the New World, sails into Baton Rouge on Wednesday on the Mississippi River. The ship docked near the USS Kidd and will be open to the public beginning today. The ship, which will depart Jan. 3, was built without the use of power tools and was used in the film ‘1492.’ The ship was financed by the Columbus Foundation, which is based in the Virgin Islands, and was built by John Patrick Sarsfield, an American engineer and maritime historian.
