AUDIO AND PHOTO GALLERY ~ SEPTEMBER 2008 Hurricane Gustav: Before, During and After On Labor Day 2008, Hurricane Gustav slammed through Louisiana, ravaging the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Area and wreaking a wide swath of havoc and destruction. As the storm headed across the Gulf of Mexico bound for the Bayou State, residents turned wary eyes to the south, and after it was gone, weary Louisianans began picking up the pieces.

About 2,000 who stayed behind and rode out the storm have been rescued, according to authorities. Ike will likely lead to the largest search and rescue operation in the state's history.
