A Look Back
A Hurricane Katrina evacuee holds a baby up for air through a massive crowd gathered outside the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans Thursday, September 1, 2005. Starting with an estimated 16,000- 20,000 people and estimated to continue through the night, evacuees were walked through the lower level of the hotel to the awaiting air-conditioned buses.

Terry Allen, 22, of Denham Springs, examines the tattered remains of a U.S. flag flown outside Skinny's Tavern near the Industrial canal; the door had a sign on it that read 'Closed For Hurricane'. Water five to six feet deep was surrounding the area still on Tuesday, when a number of boats from the Baton Rouge area combed again for people needing rescuing.

Finding shelter and relief
