LSU proposed a compromise settlement this afternoon with former basketball coach Pokey Chatman in an attempt to end the controversial saga. LSU is now offering $160,000 in postseason bonus money to Chatman, up from the $75,000 LSU initially offered in the contract. Chatman’s attorney, Mary Olive Pierson, contended Chatman was owed $170,000, arguing the possible incentives in the contract should be cumulatively added together.

An attorney for former LSU women’s basketball coach Pokey Chatman said Monday she does not think her client freely relinquished her job after allegations were raised of inappropriate conduct with a former player or players. “I don’t believe her consent to the resignation was fairly obtained or freely given,” attorney Mary Olive Pierson said. Pierson said she is in talks with the university about the “circumstances of the termination.”

LSU assistant women’s basketball coach Carla Berry announced Friday that she intends to leave the coaching profession to enter private business. “I have enjoyed my years at LSU as a player and a coach, and I have memories I will cherish for a lifetime,” Berry said. “I am excited about the future of LSU women’s basketball, and I know the Lady Tigers will do great things with our new head coach, Van Chancellor. I will always be a great fan of LSU Lady Tiger Basketball.”

When it came time to choose a new women’s basketball coach, LSU really didn’t have a choice. Not with Van Chancellor out there, positively frothing to get back in the game. Hall of Fame coach Van Chancellor is coming to Baton Rouge today, with indications that he will be named LSU’s next women’s basketball coach — possibly as early as today. Both Chancellor and LSU senior associate athletic director Herb Vincent declined to characterize the visit as an interview for the LSU job. “I am coming to talk to them about their women’s basketball position,” Chancellor said Tuesday, stopping short of making further comments.LSU has scheduled a news conference at 3 p.m. Central time today "to make a major announcement regarding its women’s basketball program," according to an LSU news release sent by e-mail this morning. LSU senior women’s administrator Judy Southard also declined to characterize the nature of Chancellor’s visit. “We’re obviously in conversations with him,” said Southard, who has been spearheading the coaching search. “We’ll have something for everyone (today).”

Former Olympic and WNBA coach Van Chancellor is the new LSU head women's basketball coach. Chancellor, who was selected to the 2007 induction class of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on April 2, was introduced this afternoon at a news conference held at LSU. He succeeds Pokey Chatman, who resigned March 7 amid allegations of inappropriate conduct with a former LSU player when that player was a member of the women's basketball team. Chancellor was the women's coach at Ole Miss from 1978-97 before leading the WNBA Houston Comets to four straight championships from 1997 through 2000. He also coached the 2004 U.S. gold medal team and has a 38-0 record in international competition. Chancellor led Ole Miss to a 439-154 record in 19 seasons from 1978-97. His career there included 14 NCAA tournament appearances, seven Sweet 16 berths and four trips to the Elite Eight.
