LaCHIP
2007-10-09
Your article “Bush’s veto threat affects LaCHIP expansion” in the Oct. 1 paper is biased and lacks balance. I think the president has good reasons for vetoing the bill, and I think the bill should be vetoed until it does what it supposed to do ... provide health coverage for low-income children.

A fight in Washington, D.C., means Louisiana won’t be able to make health insurance available to more children in working families. And the program that serves some 109,000 children today could suffer, as well, because of a deadlock between President Bush and the U.S. Congress. “It’s very disappointing,” said Gov. Kathleen Blanco. Blanco criticized the Republican members of Louisiana’s congressional delegation for turning their backs on the state’s children and, instead, marching lock-step with Bush.

The primary election is Oct. 20.

It’s back-to-school time. It’s time to think vaccines and health insurance for children. That’s the word going out from state health officials. Parents or guardians are getting information about how to get their children signed up for the free Louisiana Children’s Health Insurance Program at back-to-school fairs and other events.

Louisiana children from families with incomes higher than poverty levels are getting access to health insurance through expansion of a state program. State government will start an insurance program by January — if not earlier — that would help working families with incomes up to triple the federal poverty level buy insurance for their children.

NEW ORLEANS — Some 68,000 children in the New Orleans area lost their health-care coverage after Hurricane Katrina, but state health officials estimate that about a third of them remain eligible for government-funded health insurance.

A proposed Louisiana experiment in universal health insurance remains stalled in federal-state negotiations. Nevertheless, state officials are moving ahead with health-care-restructuring initiatives embodied in the plan. But the state’s plans are not following the expensive insurance route pushed by federal health Secretary Michael Leavitt.
