Newspapers-In-Education workshops

Workshops help you learn more about using the newspaper effectively in your classroom.

Lots of practical ideas for using the newspaper in the classroom are shared with teachers who attend Newspapers-In-Education workshops. These hands-on workshop sessions are scheduled throughout the school year. The workshops are announced in the NIE newsletter and in The Advocate.

Complimentary teaching materials are given to all participants.

In-Service workshops

You can schedule an in-service for your school or department.

In-services are held during the school day or after school. These workshops last from 1 hour to 3 hours. In-services can be geared to any grade level, particular subject, or school level (elementary, middle, high.)

In-services should be scheduled at least two weeks in advance.

Classroom presentations

Speakers from The Advocate are available to visit classrooms to speak to students about a variety of topics.

Interested teachers may arrange to have speakers from the following departments visit their classrooms: advertising, creative services, graphics, sports, and printing. Presentations may be detailed overviews of newspaper operations or what various newspaper jobs entail.

Speakers should be scheduled at least three weeks in advance.

A newsletter to inform you

The Education Update newsletter gives you new NIE ideas and keeps you abreast trends in the newspaper and educational fields. It is mailed to each participating NIE teacher.

Four weekly columns for students

Educational Services produces four weekly columns in the newspaper that can be used by all readers.

BACKGROUND, an issues feature, runs each Monday. The Bubble Gum Rapper children's page is published every Tuesday and provides entertainment as well as learning opportunities for its readers. Keeping Current, a current events fun quiz is published each Wednesday. A Li'l Lagniappe, a children's page, runs on Saturday.

Each of these features is designed to encourage teachers and students, parents, and children to read the newspaper.

Summer Reading Club

The Summer Reading Club is an annual reading program held during the summer months.

All that interested students need to do to become members of the club is read at least five books or more, and fill in the coupon which appears on the Bubble Gum Rapper page the first Tuesday in June.

The name of each child who sends in this information will be printed on the Bubble Gum Rapper page.
