25 restaurants unique to Baton Rouge

When visiting a new city, I always enjoy finding the restaurants and eateries that I cannot find in anywhere else. When in Dallas, I eat at the city's best Mexican restaurants. And on vacations to Gulf Shores, I eat Papa Rocco's pizza — because I can't find Papa Rocco's pizza anywhere else.

While visiting Baton Rouge, be sure to eat at one of our city's own unique restaurants. Below is a list of my 25 suggestions in alphabetical order.

1. Avoyelles Cafe

- Both locations of Avoyelles Café offer dinner and lunch menus full of South Louisiana favorites including crawfish or shrimp etouffee. The downtown location features special events and live entertainment.

2. Boutin's Cajun Restaurant

- Boutin's is the perfect place for Cajun food and music.

3. Brew-Bachers Grill

- Brew-Bachers, a casual eatery, serves grilled hamburgers, po-boys, sandwiches and more.

4. Capital City Grill

- Capital City Grill offers upscale casual dining and serves a mixture of Cajun and American dishes. It specializes in fresh fish, offering 2 or 3 fish specials per day.

5. Chelsea's Cafe

- Chelsea's Café' near LSU's campus is a restaurant by day and live-music bar by night. However this cafe's menu is packed with Southern favorites like chicken fried chicken and fried green tomatoes.

6. The Chimes

- The Chimes, serving a mixture of American and Cajun food, is located right outside of the north gates of LSU.

7. Coffee Call

- The locally-owned Coffee Call is the place to stop for a cup of coffee and a New Orlean's style beignet.

8. DeAngelo's Pizzeria

- DeAngelo's Pizzeria advertises that customers are "greeted with the smell of garlic and steaming tomatoes from our homemade marinara sauce." Though branching out with franchises throughout Louisiana, Alabama and Indiana, DeAngelo's is a local creation.

9. Heads & Tails Seafood

- This restaurant's dine-in menu offers a few South Louisiana favorites like seafood gumbo or etouffe. Heads & Tails' real specialty is selling fresh or boiled seafood by the pound. Menu items such as boiled crawfish and crabs are seasonal.

10. Highland Coffees

- Locally-owned Highland Coffees is located just outside the north gates of LSU. It offers a relaxing atmosphere for studying, reading or sipping fresh brewed coffee.

11. Jambalaya Shoppe

- The Jambalaya Shoppe, as its name suggests, specializes in this Louisiana favorite. Owned by Gonzales, La. natives, it also serves red beans and rice, gumbo and other fried or barbequed dinners.
