PLAQUEMINE -- Many of the homes and buildings which line the streets of downtown Plaquemine were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s, adding to the charm of this small city in Iberville Parish.

Visitors will find many interesting sights and activities in Plaquemine:

  • Plaquemine Lock State Historic Site, completed in 1909, is on the National Register of Historic Places and features a Dutch influence and a glistening white brick exterior. The site is operated by the Louisiana Office of State Parks. The facility is open for tours seven days a week. For more information, call (225) 687-7158.

  • St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church is located across Main Street from Old City Hall. This building is considered the purest example of Italian Romanesque architecture in the South. Featuring an incredibly beautiful balastrino altar, a handsome campanile and portico, it was completed in 1926. The stained glass windows of the church were made in Germany after the Second World War.

  • Plaquemine Waterfront Park, features a boardwalk for fishing and picnicking along Bayou Plaquemine.

  • Old Turnerville is just across the bayou on the outskirts of Plaquemine. There you'll find Miss Louise's House and Marietta's House, typical Acadian cottage style homes both offering tours daily.

  • The Iberville Museum, open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., features artifacts and photographs of life in Iberville Parish around the early 1900s. There is also a Mardi Gras room complete with costumes of kings and queens of past carnival balls.
