Louis Miller June Checklist

  • Keep weed growth down by weeding regularly.
  • Check for plant pests and take appropriate action.
  • Harvest vegetable and flower gardens daily.
  • Seek out and eliminate poison ivy.
  • Remember to disinfect pruning shears between cuts.
  • Watch for cinch bugs in St. Augustine grass.
  • Watch for fleas on your pets and begin a control program.
  • Control insects and powdery mildew.
  • Mow your lawn on a regular basis at the tallest recommended height.
  • De-thatch lawns.
  • Plan and begin construction on new water garden.
  • June Weekly Tips

    Week 1

  • Plant hosa lillies in shady places for summer-long color.
  • De-thatch lawns and fertilize for a fast recovery.
  • Re-apply systemic insecticide as needed on crepe myrtles, gardenias, etc.

    Week 2

  • Harvest vegetables for peak quality instead of large sizes.
  • Check the proper mowing height for your grass and adjust the lawn mower. Don’t scalp the lawn!
  • Water regularly – drought stress hurts vegetable and flower yields.

    Week 3

  • Attach poison ivy before it flowers and drops seeds.
  • Use bird netting in the garden to foil pests.
  • Pick vegetables early in the day for the best flavor.

    Week 4

  • For the best flavor, don’t refrigerate tomatoes until just before use.
  • Protect plant roots from hot summer sun by adding mulch.
  • Check crepe myrtles and euonymous for powdery mildew.
