Louis Miller January Checklist

  • Prepare beds and plant roses.
  • Finish preparing spring flowering beds.
  • Purchase seed potatoes for planting in the vegetable garden.
  • Complete major pruning projects on trees and shrubs that don’t bloom in the spring.
  • Start tomato, pepper and eggplant indoors or in a protected area.
  • Clean out the purple martin house. The first purple martin scouts will be arriving around the end of the month.
  • Clean out the garden shed and dispose of old chemicals. Select rose, tree and shrub varieties for planting.
  • Clean out stubble in the vegetable and flower gardens and add to compost.
  • Continue to harvest from the vegetable and flower gardens.
  • Collect soil samples and send to the County Agent for testing.

    Week 1

  • Clean outdated, unlabeled and unusable lawn products from your shed.
  • Change oil filters and grease lawn equipment.
  • Plant tomato seeds in protected area.

    Week 2

  • Collect soil samples and get them tested.
  • Apply Gypsum to poorly drained areas.
  • Browse garden catalogs for new products and plant varieties.
  • Add Finch feeders to the yard or patio.

    Week 3

  • Inspect the foundation of the home for termite evidence.
  • Investigate noises in the attic (could be rats, squirrels, etc.)
  • Plan new garden areas for the spring.
  • Cut down liriope and monkey grass to improve spring appearance.

    Week 4

  • Check evergreen shrubs for scale insects.
  • Search for Camelia varieties to add to landscape.
  • Prune evergreen shrubs that don’t bloom in the spring.
  • Plant roses now so roots will get established.
