Advocate contributor, assistant Food editor’s husband dies

The Advocate Food staff is sad to report that Ray Sonnier, husband of Assistant Food Editor Cheramie Sonnier and also an occasional wine columnist for the Food section, passed away unexpectedly Oct. 30. Ray was a wine enthusiast, not a wine snob.

He enjoyed discovering and introducing moderately priced wines that paired well with food. Members of the gourmet supper club Ray and Cheramie belonged to looked forward to the dinners the couple hosted in their charming arts and crafts-style home.

The menus were imaginative, and Ray’s selections of wine for each course were, according to a member of the group, “always impeccable.” Readers will miss his tasting notes and recommendations on affordable, or as he referred to them, “approachable” wines.

Due to this family emergency, Cheramie Sonnier’s Book Report column and stories on the Association of Food Journalists programs at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center will be postponed.
