Walk away with a bargain on chicken thighs
Though the prices are higher this summer than last spring, chicken thighs are still a good buy in the meat department. If you don’t mind cooking chicken on the bone, the price is even better.
The least expensive chicken purchase is the dark meat chicken quarter, a thigh and leg, sold in 10-pound bags for $5.99. If you buy the 10-pound bag, re-package the chicken quarters into serving portions for a meal as soon as you get home. Freeze what you won’t be cooking within a day or two.
Chicken thighs are also sold boneless and skinless. The boneless, skinless thigh meat is easy to cut into pieces to use in stir-fries, jambalaya, spaghetti and other dishes.
If you simmer chicken thighs for an extended time in a slow cooker, use larger pieces of chicken so that the meat doesn’t overcook. It gets stringy and dry when overcooked.
