Gourmet products include Muffuletta Mix

NEW ORLEANS — Tourists not understanding that Italian olive salad is the name for the chopped mixture used in the muffuletta led to a new product in Aunt Sally’s Praline Shops Inc.’s gourmet line.

Aunt Sally’s retail shop at 810 Decatur St. in the French Quarter is across the street from Central Grocery, where the New Orleans specialty sandwich originated in 1906. Tourists were tasting the muffuletta at the grocery store and then walking over to Aunt Sally’s to shop.

Aunt Sally’s had its own version of olive salad, but “the tourists weren’t buying our product because they didn’t know what it was,” said Frank Simoncioni, chief executive officer. “They would ask for muffuletta mix so I researched and found that no one had registered the name “muffuletta mix.” He registered the names “muffuletta mix” and “muffaletta mix.”

Aunt Sally’s olive salad was re-labeled as Aunt Sally’s Creole Italian Gourmet New Orleans Famous Muffuletta Mix. It is sold in 16-ounce jars for $7.99.

“Wholesalers love it, and it’s selling because now people know what it is,” Simoncioni said.
