Annual interfaith breakfast to feature Muslim scholar

“When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks and broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him …” — from Luke 24:30-31

The Bible tells of two disciples who meet the resurrected Jesus on the road to Emmaus without recognizing him.

LSU professor Bob Mann found new meaning in that story during a trip this summer to Turkey.

“That story speaks to me of the importance of food, not only for our sustenance but for our spiritual eyesight,” Mann told those attending an interfaith dinner this week.

The disciples, as recorded in the Book of Luke, finally see Jesus for who he is with the sharing of bread.

Likewise, Mann said, he recognized at the dinner table the commonality he shared with his Muslim hosts in witnessing their love for their children, hospitality and God.

Perhaps that’s why interfaith dialogue so often involves a meal.

On Tuesday, The Atlas Foundation, an interfaith group founded by Turkish Muslims who sponsored Mann’s trip to Turkey, held its annual Intercultural Friendship and Dialog Dinner.

On Thursday, the Interfaith Federation of Greater Baton Rouge will hold its Community Prayer Breakfast.

For years the federation was known as the Greater Baton Rouge Federation of Churches and Synagogues, but it changed its name a couple of years ago and opened its membership beyond Christians and Jews to include Muslims and followers of other faiths.

This year its prayer breakfast will feature a Muslim speaker.

Former federation executive director Margaret Johnson met Muhammed Çetin during an Atlas Foundation dinner a couple of years ago and suggested that LSU assistant professor Burak Aksoylu, an Atlas volunteer, arrange for Çetin to speak at the prayer breakfast.

Çetin, a religious scholar, will speak on the themes of his newest book, “The Gülen Movement: Civic Service Without Borders,” Aksoylu said.
