Dealing with diabetes

After years of denial, local woman deals with her condition by helping others

Michele Aucoin, of Denham Springs, says she was in denial for several years after learning in 2003 that she had type 2 diabetes.

When she finally confronted it last summer, she did it in a big way.

She picked up the phone and called the local office of the American Diabetes Association to volunteer.

“I wanted to be involved,” Aucoin said.

This past fall, she and her co-workers, friends and family took part in the annual “Step Out” fundraising walk event to fight diabetes.

“They were the top fundraising team for the event last year. They raised almost $4,000,” said Lori Koonce, manager of the American Diabetes Association, Baton Rouge market.

Koonce said she remembers Aucoin’s first call to her office.

“’I have diabetes, and I’ve been in denial,’” is what Aucoin said, Koonce recalled.

Tuesday, the American Diabetes Association holds its annual “Diabetes Alert Day” to try to bring type 2 diabetes to the forefront of public awareness.

The association is encouraging people to check out their risks for type 2 diabetes, a disease that can sometimes be prevented.

People are encouraged to get their free diabetes risk test, healthy lifestyle tips and more by calling 1-800-diabetes (1-800-342-2388) or visiting http://www.stopdiabetes.com/ or Stop Diabetes

Although Diabetes Alert Day is a one-day event, the risk test is available all year long, according to the association.

In type 2 diabetes, the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin or the cells “ignore” the insulin that’s necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy, according to the association.

That's true the Diabetes Alert Day is just for a day but we could make it an every day alert so that whenever we come across somebody who is at risk to develop diabetes we could become an advocate and send him where he can take the test. This might save someone's life. Evelyn Guzman http://www.free-symptoms-of-diabetes-alert.com (If you want to visit, just click but if it doesn’t work, copy and paste it onto your browser.)
