Two to be honored for their outreach
Myrtle E.B. Dorsey, chancellor of Baton Rouge Community College, and Christel Slaughter, a partner at SSA Consultants LLC, will be recognized for their work to promote justice and harmony at the 47th annual Brotherhood and Sisterhood Awards Dinner on Nov. 19.
“Both of these ladies have made outstanding contributions in the Baton Rouge community and work every day to help break down barriers that divide our society, barriers that stop people from achieving their goals. We are excited about this opportunity to honor them,” said Stephen Toups, 2009 Award Committee chairman and corporate vice president of Turner Industries Group.
The awards, started under the leadership of the Baton Rouge Chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, are now being continued by the 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge.
Dorsey has served as the chancellor of Baton Rouge Community College since 2002. Since taking the lead at BRCC, she has been involved in the growth of student enrollment as well as construction of new facilities on campus. Under her leadership, the campus received its first Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accreditation.
She serves on the American Association of Community Colleges Board of Directors, and the boards of the Baton Rouge Area Chamber, Baton Rouge General Health System, the Patient Quality Care Committee, Friends of Louisiana Public Broadcasting, Baton Rouge Literacy Coalition and the Baton Rouge Film Commission. Baton Rouge Business Report named her one of the most influential women in the city.
Dorsey earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Morgan State University and received her doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin in the Community College Leadership Program.
Slaughter spent seven years on the LSU faculty before joining SSA in 1983.
Currently, she serves on the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, and is a member of the Baton Rouge Area Chamber of Commerce, Junior Achievement, the Academy of Management and the American Institute of Decision Sciences.
Slaughter has been named one of the best speakers in Baton Rouge and has served on transition teams for four Louisiana governors. She received her doctorate from LSU in Systems Management and Organization Design.
