We appreciate a “Style File” with a fashion pedigree.

NAME: Joyce Dennis, Baton Rouge and Washington, D.C.
AGE: 50+
OCCUPATION: “I enjoy merging my passion for art and design with my experience as a Real Estate agent to create new functional environments.”

Tell us about what you’re wearing.
“This suit is actually my own ‘vintage.’ I found this chocolate brown three-piece gabardine suit by Infinitive in Paris back in 1999. I was attracted to the goldstone studs that trim it. The buttery Prada handbag works easily with the Dolce & Gabbana animal print sling backs.”

Who or what most influences your style?
“I’ve been having a fashion love affair since my teens. I was first exposed to high fashion by my sister, who worked at Vogue magazine back then. Then, as a college student, I had an amazing experience working as a sales associate in a buyers training program in a luxury 5th Avenue department store. I got to see lots of actors and celebrities, including Greta Garbo, Gloria Vanderbilt, Tony Curtis and Nelson Rockefeller.”

What’s the best fashion advice you’ve ever gotten?
“1. Don’t forget the extras — pearls, chains, cuffs, shawls, scarves, belts, bags and boots. 2. Ooh! Leggings are dangerous! As comfortable as they might be, most women don’t wear them well (unless they are under 35 years old and/or weigh less than 120 pounds). 3. Animal prints are FUN, but more is less! Never use more than one splash.”

What’s on your must-have list for fall?
“Gucci is hot again! Mad about piles of pearls worn with slimming sheath dresses. ‘Motorcycle’ leather jackets are a must have, and Fendi has wonderful leather jackets with trim. Thrilled about all the studded handbags and boots.”

Finish this sentence. I splurge on...
“Unique and colorful leather jackets. I find them irresistible. They provide a unique twist to a neutral palette.”

I skimp on...
“Hose.”

Are you a shoe or handbag kind of woman?
“Mostly shoes. I’ve never been able to fight the temptation of shoes. But, I’m always excited to see my name on a handbag under the Christmas tree.”

How many pairs do you own?
“There is no way to tell. In each closet, I have them grouped by color on an amazing shoe wall.”

Name a celebrity whose closet you’d like to raid.
“I’m attracted to ‘city chic.’ Right now, I’d say my style icon is a modified Victoria Beckham.”

Name the beauty products you can’t live without?
“YSL (Yves Saint Laurent) Volume Effet Faux Cils Mascara, Laura Mercier primer, Laura Mercier secret concealer/camouflage and sunscreen everywhere.”

Your house is on fire and you can grab only one thing out of your closet. What would it be?
“I’d probably grab the family photos. You can’t replace those.”

Make us laugh. What was your biggest fashion mistake?
“While standing and chatting with a small group of people in a hotel lobby, something brushed my knee. I looked down just in time to see my mint green slip pool around my ankles as it hit the floor. I calmly maintained eye contact with the person speaking and quickly stepped out of the slip and crammed it into my right blazer pocket. (So, even though it may be a favorite, get rid of it when the elastic is worn.)”
