POP QUIZ: Perry A. Snyder
Each week The Advocate asks a different “quiz taker” for his or her current favorites in pop culture.
QUIZ TAKER: Perry A. Snyder, Ph.D; “66 and counting”; executive director of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, whose national headquarters is in Baton Rouge at the corner of Goodwood and Lobdell.
WHAT I’M LISTENING TO: “Everything between soprano Renée Fleming (a member) and Willie and Waylon (nonmembers). And, thanks to my Midwestern wife, Garrison Keillor’s ‘A Prairie Home Companion.’”
WHAT I’M READING: “The most recent novels by two members of our honor society, David Baldacci and John Grisham, as well as nonfiction by C.S. Lewis, George Will and James Autry, to name but three. Needless to say, The Advocate, especially Sunday morning’s Sports Section and Danny Heitman’s weekly musings.”
WHAT I’M WATCHING: “Any and everything by Ken Burns, the McLaughlin Group and reruns of Bob Newhart and Mary Tyler Moore. Movies: Mainly classics like ‘Chariots of Fire,’ ‘Cool Hand Luke’ and ‘Dr. Strangelove,’ and an occasional ‘Julie & Julia.’”
WHERE I’M SURFING (ON THE INTERNET): “Dandy Don (what LSU fan doesn’t?), Politico, MSN, ESPN and eBay.”
WHAT’S YOUR PASSION ? “Family, including first grandson 9-month-old Anderson Keating; work, the privilege of laboring in what I like to call ‘the vineyards of honor and excellence;’ and, back permitting, golf. I play to a gentleman’s handicap of 17.”
BONUS QUESTION:
What exactly does Phi Kappa Phi do, and how did it end up in Baton Rouge?
“Our honor society recognizes and rewards the best and brightest in all disciplines on over 300 campuses. Headquarters were relocated in 1979 from the University of Michigan to LSU thanks to an invitation from (former) Chancellor Paul Murrill. We were there from 1979 until our host university needed space after Katrina. Headquarters have been located in an A. Hays Towns building since December 2006.”
