The New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, 2800 Chartres St., New Orleans, will open its doors to middle- and high-school students and their parents for Open Studio Day from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 7.
At Open Studio Day, families will see artist-teachers’ studios and classrooms. Application and audition information tables will be set up throughout the building so guests can learn more about NOCCA directly from faculty and students. This is the first step for students who are considering applying and auditioning to NOCCA.
Open Studio highlights include the release of NOCCA’s 2010-11 Student Application, the first opportunity to register for audition workshops and drawings for free tickets to performances.
NOCCA offers tuition-free intensive arts training in creative writing, dance, media arts, classical instrumental music, jazz, vocal, drama, musical theater, theater design and visual arts.

All-State Jazz band named
Several area students have been selected to play with the Louisiana Music Educators’ Association’s All State Jazz Ensemble.
They include:
- Alto saxophone — Dylan Parker, first chair, St. Michael the Archangel High School; Evan Taylor, second chair, Fontainebleau High School, Mandeville.
- Tenor saxophone — Jonathan Lyons, first chair, Ponchatoula High School; Ross Starks, second chair, Catholic High School.
- Baritone saxophone — Clay Matherne, first chair, Fontainebleau High School.
- Trumpet — Harry Morter Jr., first chair, Covington High School; Garrett Corripio, second chair, Catholic High School; Dominic Ducre, third chair, Fontainebleau High School; Eric Peters, fourth chair, St. Michael the Archangel High School; Kaleb Gaspard, fifth chair, North Vermillion High School, Maurice.

Anthology accepts poems
Thirteen Runnels High School students recently had their poems accepted for publication in Creative Communication’s upcoming poetry anthology, “A Celebration of Young Poets.”
English teachers from across the nation have been invited to vote for the top 10 poems published in the anthology. Winners will receive a monetary award.
The Runnels poets, all sophomores who submitted their poems when they were freshmen in English I, include Macy Alexander, Ashton Baker, Nicholas Blunck, Paige Bownds, Tori Colomb, Savanna Cox, Lexi DeWitt, Alex Hance, Joelee Hanna, Richie Hernandez, Gracey House, Majdal Ismail and Savanna LaBauve.
Flag team plans craft fair
Christian Life Academy’s newly formed flag team is organizing an arts and crafts fair to raise money for flags and uniforms.
The fair will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 5 at the school, 2037 Quail Drive.
