POP QUIZ: Melissa Parmelee
Each week The Advocate asks a different “quiz taker” for his or her current favorites in pop culture.
QUIZ TAKER: Melissa Parmelee, 26, major gifts coordinator for Capital Area United Way.
WHAT I’M LISTENING TO: “I listen to everything but the radio is usually on K-LOVE (WBKL 97.7, contemporary Christian music).”
WHAT I’M READING: “I read The Advocate, The Business Report and 225 on a regular basis.”
WHAT I’M WATCHING: “Anything that can make me laugh or motivate me, like ‘The Office’ and ‘The Biggest Loser.’”
WHERE I’M SURFING (ON THE INTERNET): “I am a huge fan of Google and, of course, Facebook (and I am not afraid to admit it!)”
WHAT’S YOUR PASSION: “Easy… LSU football, and anyone who knows me can tell you that! I have suggested it be year round but no one takes me seriously.”
BONUS QUESTION:
When people think about the staff of the United Way, most probably they think they’re much older than you. How did someone so young get involved with this nonprofit, and why do you stay?
“Before graduating from LSU, public relations students are advised to work in nonprofit organizations if the chance presents itself. It was time to enter the real world and United Way happened to be hiring. Every day, I have the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than just me. I am able to educate the greater Baton Rouge area on how they can make a difference through giving, advocating and volunteering. After two years, I have decided I am too lucky to give this job up!”
