HALUSKA EARNS MBA SCHOLARSHIP: Emily Haluska, a second-year LSU Flores MBA student, has earned one of the 2008 National Association of Women MBAs AXA Achievement Scholarships. She received the award recently in Stamford, Conn.
According to the congratulatory letter sent to Haluska, the judges felt her application “exemplified the organization’s mission of empowering graduate women in business to propel them into leadership positions.”
Haluska founded LSU’s NAWMBA chapter earlier this year and is its president.
NAWMBA awards seven $2,000 scholarships each year to members around the country based on a written essay, grade-point average, professional accomplishments, and academic, personal and professional references.

NICHOLLS STATE HOMECOMING QUEEN, KING NAMED: Marquita Hill, a senior from Boutte majoring in child and family social services, was crowned homecoming queen, and Ugochukwu Ezema, a senior biology pre-med major from Kingston, Jamaica, was crowned homecoming king at Nicholls State University on Nov. 1.
Hill is the daughter of Dean and Marschell Hill. Ezema is the son of Dennis and Grace Ezema.
Hill was nominated by Residence Life, of which she is head resident. She is the treasurer for the Resident Hall Association and a student Supreme Court justice for the Student Government Association.
Ugochukwu is vice president of the Nicholls International Community, a Student Government Association senator and an NAACP ambassador. The National Pan-Hellenic Council nominated him.
The members of the 2008 Homecoming Court are Melissa Chabert, a communicative disorders senior from Galliano; Marquita Christy, a psychology junior from Donaldsonville; Meagan Hebert, a communicative disorders junior from Raceland; Brittany Ohlin, a nursing major from Berwick; Sara Taylor, a human resource management senior from Houma; and Anna Waguespack, a nursing junior from Thibodaux.
LEIGHNINGER RECEIVES AWARD: Former Baton Rouge resident Robert D. Leighninger Jr., a faculty associate in the School of Social Work at Arizona State University, recently received the American Public Works Association Abel Wolman Award.
Established in 1987, the Abel Wolman Award is presented annually by APWA’s Public Works Historical Society to recognize the best new book published in the field of public works history. A committee of public works professionals and scholars selects the recipient.
Leighninger’s book, “Building Louisiana: The Legacy of the Public Works Administration,” (University Press of Mississippi, 2007), documents the structures erected in Louisiana by the Public Works Administration of the 1930s.
