Eight preservationists will be honored by the Foundation for Historical Louisiana as the 2008 Preservation Award winners at the organization’s 32nd annual ceremony July 24. The award honors individuals or organizations for their outstanding dedication to Louisiana’s historic, architectural and cultural heritage.

Honorees are William and Nancy Jensen for stewardship to the historic Potts House on North Boulevard and for years of research and collecting that has added to the body of knowledge of the capital city; Sadie Roberts-Joseph for her creativity, advocacy and dedication to the African-American Museum on South Boulevard in Beauregard Town; Veda Norfolk for innovative and dynamic leadership as president of FHL during its formative years; Peggy Hunt for her knowledge and dedication to educational programs at the Old Governor’s Mansion, and Sylvia Duke for her many years of service and philanthropy to the foundation in numerous preservation projects.

In addition, two Phoenix Awards will be given to special recipients: Julia Sims for the restoration of The Beale House, which was extensively damaged by fire and was restored in 2007; and to the McKinley High School Alumni organization for its resolve and stewardship of historic old McKinley High School on Thomas Delpit Avenue. It also was destroyed by fire and was rebuilt with the guidance of loyal alumni.

The ceremony will take place at the Baton Rouge City Club. Cocktails and cash bar are at 6 p.m.; dinner will be served at 7 p.m. The cost is $65 for FHL members and $75 for guests/nonmembers. Reserved seating per couple is $250, and a reserved sponsor table for eight is $500.   Reservations may also be made at http://www.blacktie-louisiana.com/

The Foundation’s Preservation Awards Committee is chaired by Michele Deshotels.  Serving on the committee are David Norwood, Jonathan Fricker, Darryl Gissel, Melanie Hanley, Carolyn Bennett and Lenore Feeney, chair of the foundation’s Board of Directors.
