Pop Quiz: Stacey Simmons

Each week The Advocate asks a different “quiz taker” for his or her current favorites in pop culture.
QUIZ TAKER:
Stacey Simmons, 38, director Red Stick Animation Festival and director, Baton Rouge Area Digital Industries Consortium.

WHAT I’M LISTENING TO:
The Idan Raichel Project—“It started out as a guy in Israel…and he just started playing around with music throughout the world. It was a big time of influx of Ethiopian people coming into Israel and he was entranced by their music and started weaving their music into his own.”

WHAT I’M WATCHING:
“Real Time with Bill Maher” — “I like it because its kind of like paying attention to the news without having to wonder if you’re getting commentary or actual news. With Bill Maher you know you’re getting actual commentary. You can watch it and you can either agree with him or you can disagree with him. But there’s always a conservative view and a liberal view on the show. It’s fairly well-rounded.”

WHAT I’M READING:
“To Heal a Fractured World: The Ethics of Responsibility” by Jonathan Sacks — “He’s a very eloquent writer, writing about a principle of making corrections to heal an imperfect world. That really resonates with me. It says it’s our job as people to help each other. We’re not supposed to rely on some other divine power other than the divine power that God has given us.”

WHERE I’M SURFING (WEB SITE):
www.kimerleecuryl.com — “It’s a horse Web site and I’m a horse person so I was sneaking pictures from there.”
BONUS QUESTION
You are director of the upcoming Red Stick Animation Festival, so pick a side—Bugs or Mickey?

“Oh, man—that’s rough. I don’t know if I can pick between those two. They’re both so important for different reasons. I’d have to say Bugs. I think Mickey is responsible for creating culture and I think Bugs has always had the ability to speak for culture.”
