Shopping for a prom dress can become overwhelming and sometimes impossible for girls who cannot pay the retail ticket price.

Fortunately, The Cinderella Project of Baton Rouge is making a difference for hundreds of local high school girls this prom season.

“We want to give 250 girls the perfect dress,” said Shelton Jones, co-founder of the non-profit, volunteer-run organization.

Jones, along with co-founder Sarah Dupree, formed a local version of the Cinderella Project this year to donate free prom dresses to high school students who do not have the money to buy expensive dresses.

The Cinderella Project will donate the dresses to its pilot school, Istrouma High School, on April 19. Prom goers will be able to shop and pick their gowns for free in a boutique-style atmosphere at Living Faith Christian Center, where gift bags filled with prom-related goodies will be distributed.

Istrouma High Principal Leida Bera said the project could help boost prom attendance on May 3.

“Buying a dress, especially one that you’ll only wear once, is expensive. Some students work and some are involved in extracurricular activities and some just can’t afford spending that much money on a dress. Some had planned on not attending for that very reason,” Bera said.

The cost to attend the prom is $60 for juniors and $70 for seniors,  a price students are more likely able to pay if they don’t face the cost of a dress as well,  said Catrina Minnifield, the prom sponsor at Istrouma High.

“For many of them, it’s like, ‘oh my gosh….I don’t have to pay for a dress,” Minnifield said. “I think this may just beat regular prom attendance because of this dress project. I’m making prom deposits on a regular basis.”

Minnifield, who has visited some of the drop-off sites with prom committee students, said the dresses will more than accommodate a variety of popular dress styles, wishes and sizes that girls have requested.

“The gowns are gorgeous,” she said.

In addition, guys are going to receive discounts on their tuxedo rentals and free boutonnières will be provided.

Some salons have offered to do some of the girls’ hair for free and some students will also receive makeovers. Other prizes will include a free spa day and free exercise classes, said Minnifield.
