Sandcastle competition highlight of Galveston summer
Whether you take a walk or bike ride along the boardwalk, hang out at the beach, visit Moody Gardens, splash around at Schlitterbahn water park or visit historic sites, there’s always something to do in Galveston – and it’s only a short drive away.
Although you might be hesitant to visit a place that was devastated by Hurricane Ike last year, RoShelle Gaskins, public relations manager for Galveston Island Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the majority of attractions are open. In March, 80 percent of tourism sites were open, and even more were expected to be open today.
One thing that is sure to draw visitors and locals alike is the American Institute of Architects Sandcastle Competition on June 6 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Gaskins said 80 teams compete for the best sandcastle design. Some of those can be quite entertaining, she said.
She recalled that last year some favorites were a gas meter, which reflected the state of high gas prices, and a Guitar Hero sandcastle.
Another summer event is “Movie Night on the Strand,” which is held outdoors at Saengerfest Park in the historic downtown district. Movie-goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets and plan a night out with a date, friends or family. The tentative schedule is as follows:
- May 2: “E.T.”; 8:30 p.m.
- June 6: “Raiders of the Lost Ark”; 8:30 p.m.
- Aug. 1: “Some Like it Hot”; 8 p.m.
- Sept. 5: “Grease”; 8 p.m.
“We have such great versatility in Galveston, so it makes it a lot of fun,” Gaskins said.
