Miss. casinos back on track after Gustav

It’s been nearly four years since Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast in 2005, and unfortunately, the only thing that seemed to take the word Katrina off of people’s lips was the storm of 2008, Gustav.

Gustav wreaked havoc in Louisiana and along the Gulf Coast, but the good news is the casinos in Mississippi were up and running again only two days after the storm hit, according to state officials.

With millions of dollars invested in post-Katrina recovery, development along the Coast is lending mixed results.

On one hand, some condo development has slowed, while others have had no problems getting off of the ground. Many of the projects that are doing well now were planned before Katrina, officials say. They cite the country’s economic condition and the banking industry’s problems as the cause of some slowdown in new condo development.

On the other hand, casino development is still on track. Officials cite a change in gaming laws in the success of Biloxi casinos. After Katrina, a new law ended riverboat-only gambling and allowed for land development, as long as casinos were on properties that had control of the water’s edge.

Here is a list of some gambling opportunities in Mississippi:

Plans are in the works to open this casino, being developed by Jimmy Buffett and Harrah’s, by 2010 on the south side of U.S. 90. It will be on the 46 acres formerly occupied by Grand Casino and Casino Magic.
