If you’re planning on a getaway this spring or summer and don’t want to go too far from home, consider Lake Charles. The area features casinos, shopping, horse racing, wetlands, children’s activities and more.

One of the main attractions for the past several years has been L’auberge du Lac Casino Resort. It not only features the usual gambling fare but also has plenty of shopping on site and a lazy river for the kids.

The resort is also home to the Tom Fazio-designed Contraband Bayou Gold Club, a par-71 championship 18-hole golf course.

The resort’s recent completion of a $67 million expansion tower project has doubled the retail outlets there. The expansion has also upped the hotels’ guest rooms by 252. The suites in the expansion feature amenities such as designer furnishings and in-room bars.

Other gambling sites in the Lake Charles area include Delta Downs Racetrack Casino & Hotel and the Isle of Capri Casino & Hotel.

But if the glamorous life isn’t your thing, Lake Charles’ Creole Nature Trail All-American Road can take you back to the basics.

Named as one of the top birding spots in North America in 2006 by “Wildbird” magazine, the area is perfect for recreational outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, crabbing, shelling, tubing and more. And chances are that you’ll run into an alligator or two while you’re there.

If you’re looking for a learning experience, you might want to try some of the museums in the area. The Mardi Gras Museum, the Brimstone Museum, the DeQuincy Railroad Museum and the Museum of Imperial Calcasieu offer great ways to learn about the history of the parish.

You may also want to check out the Historic Charpentier District of Victorian homes. Many buildings in this area, which also features the Black Heritage Gallery, are on the Registry of Historic Places.

And for the kids, the Children’s Museum is chock-full of activities that make learning fun. The museum is at 327 Broad St. in Lake Charles.

Hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $6 for children and adults, free for children younger than 23 months and $4 seniors 55 and older.
