PENSACOLA, Fla. – What do an 18th-century British soldier and a 19th-century yellow-fever victim have in common?
To learn the answers, talk with re-enactors at grave sites and allow yourself to be transported back in time at one of the oldest extant cemeteries in Florida.
On May 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., visitors can enjoy the public event “Get in the Spirit” at St. Michael’s Cemetery as guides discuss conservation methods, reveal the secret language of funerary art and share stories about the families buried in the cemetery who contributed to Pensacola’s rich and diverse history.
At the event, the public will learn about funerary art, symbols and the meaning of the many flowers that grow on the site.
Every marker, tomb and mausoleum tells a different story, with architecture and iconology portraying attitudes and beliefs about life and death over time.
The event is sponsored by the University of West Florida and the St. Michael’s Cemetery Foundation of Pensacola.
The event is open to the public in conjunction with the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation annual statewide conference “History, Heritage & Hurricanes,” held in Pensacola from May 14 to May 17.
