A combination of beaches, art and Florida history awaits visitors to Pensacola this spring and summer.

About 80 percent of the people who visit each year go by vehicle, many of them from Louisiana, according to Laura Lee, public relations and media manager of the Pensacola Bay Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. Those making the trip after late May should find plenty to do.

To commemorate Pensacola’s 450th anniversary, the area will begin its 450 consecutive days of celebration beginning May 23, which will lead to a big birthday party on Aug. 15, 2009.

Pensacola’s miles and miles of open beaches that skirt the Gulf of Mexico are a big draw. As part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, the beaches are protected by the National Park Service and aren’t wall-to-wall condominiums.

But Pensacola has more to offer than just beaches. It is home to the oldest church and cemetery in Florida. There’s also a free history museum and the National Naval Aviation Museum.

The Pensacola arts scene comes alive with an extended number of Gallery Night events. The galleries open at night to allow more time to show off artists’ work. Music will fill the air with a pair of concert series each Tuesday and Thursday.
