Shrimp, Petroleum fest is a Labor Day tradition

Kick up your heels. Eat a few dozen shrimp. Rub shoulders with locals. The fun never stops at the Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival today through Monday in Morgan City’s Lawrence Park.

Louisiana’s oldest chartered harvest festival, the event is one of the state’s premier festivals.  It began in 1936 when the port of Morgan City and Berwick received the first boatload of  jumbo shrimp. It expanded in 1967 when the oil industry was firmly implanted into the local economy.

Don’t limit your activities. Events are scheduled for every age group. The Mitchell Brothers Carnival is presenting rides and games, and more than 100 artists, crafters and vendors have booths set up under the cover of the U.S. 90 bridge.

Children’s Day activities, Saturday, Aug. 30, start at 9 a.m. with sack races, three-legged races and more. At 10 a.m. storytellers will entertain the kids, and the Children’s Day mini street parade begins at 11:30 a.m. Decorated bicycles, wagons, strollers and four wheelers are welcome to participate. The McDermott/Teche Regional Medical Center Children’s Village, open 1-5 p.m. through Monday, will feature a smoking dragon, games, prizes, and face painting.

Satisfy your appetite at the 20th annual Cajun Culinary Classic featuring Cajun and Creole dishes. The event takes place 5-11 p.m. Friday, noon-11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and noon to 9 p.m. Monday.

Music will feature local and international artists including the J.J. Muggler Band, Krossfyre, Crossroads, Eli Seals and Alibi, Rockin’ Dopsie and the Zydeco Twisters, Chee Weez, Waylon Thibodaux, Vince Anthony and the Blue Note Band,  and Warren Storm-Willie T and the Cypress Band.

To learn more about Morgan City and its people, visit the Cultural and Heritage Expo in the Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival Center, 715 Second St., where you’ll find exhibits, films, demonstrations and lectures.

The festival Mass takes place at 8 a.m. Sunday in the park. In the event of rain, services will be at Holy Cross Catholic Church. The Blessing of the Fleet will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday followed by the water parade led by the U.S. Coast Guard Color Guard. A highlight is watching the parade of offshore supply boats, muscle boats and pleasure craft.
