Dance over to Breaux Bridge for the Crawfish Festival

Residents of Breaux Bridge take great pride in the their town’s  title, “Crawfish Capital of the World.’’ And they know how to pay tribute to the crustacean with flourish. The annual Crawfish Festival takes place today through Sunday, May 4.

People gather in Park Hardy downtown for music, dancing, contests and what else — all the crawfish they can possibly eat.

It’s no secret that Cajuns love food, and at this festival, they dish up crawfish etouffee, crawfish boudin, crawfish po-boys,  crawfish burritos, crawfish spinach boat, crawfish jambalaya, crawfish pies, crawfish-stuffed pork chops and of course, boiled crawfish. And you’ll find other foods as well.

One of the best features of the festival is the entertainment. More than 30 groups will be performing Cajun, zydeco and swamp on three stages all three days.

Performing tonight will be Ray Abshire, Pine Leaf Boys, Dustin Ray and Southern Groove, Feu Follet, Geno Delafose and French Rockin’ Boogie and Jamie Bergeron and the Kickin’ Cajuns and Horace Trahan and Huval-Doucet.

Among Saturday night’s entertainers will be Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, Willie T., Warren Storm and Cypress, Damon Troy and Cheap Shot, Richard LeBeouf and Detour, and Goldman Thibodeaux and the Lawtell Playboys.  On Sunday, visitors will hear Nik-L-Beer, Al Berard Family Band and Lil Nathan and the Zydeco Big Timers among others.

Don’t miss the contests.

Race your crawfish at the “World Famous Crawfish Races,” enter the Crawfish Eating Contest or show off your culinary skills at the Crawfish Etouffee Cook-off.  Two-step over to the Cajun Dance Contest or the Zydeco Dance Contest.  And if you need to rest, bring a lawn chair for the 9:30 a.m. parade Sunday along Bridge and Rees streets.

Admission to the festival is $5 on Friday and Sunday, $10 on  Saturday. A three-day pass is $15. No ice chests, little red wagons, glass containers or dogs, please. For information,  go to http://www.bbcrawfest.com or call (337) 332-6655.
