Discovering Titanic
From the inner canopy of the rain forests to the dark depths of the sea, Moody Gardens combines education with entertainment to provide fun for the whole family.
Its concept of using three pyramids – Discovery Museum, Rainforest Pyramid and Aquarium Pyramid – helps organize information and provides a “wow” factor.
There’s always something going on, but the biggest thing now is “Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition,” in Discovery Museum, which lasts until early September.
“It’s perfect for spring and summer travel,” said Anja Pfingsten, public relations coordinator. “It’s a blockbuster exhibition. It’s world class. It’s amazing to see.”
Pfingsten said more than 125 items from the doomed ship are on display, and there is something sure to pique any visitor’s interest.
“It just depends on what you’re looking for,” Pfingsten said. “We have china that survived and paper artifacts. Normally paper wouldn’t survive, but they were protected by leather. We have sheet music, currency, and we also have an entire men’s outfit.”
The other big attraction for this summer is the new Moody Gardens Golf Course, set to open in June. The result of an $18 million renovation of the former Galveston Municipal Golf Course, the par-72 course was designed by Jacobsen Hardy Gold.
It’s a seaside course with a tropical feel and features a new, larger driving range; a new golf cart fleet; new maintenance equipment; and a remodeled clubhouse and pro shop.
Back at the nearby Rainforest Pyramid, “Living Jewels of the Rainforest” showcases chameleons, cobras, spider tortoises, vibrant plants and flowers and a very special guest: a 16-foot anaconda.
“(The exhibit) brings to Galveston some reptile species that are rare in the wild and in captivity,” said John Zendt, general manager. “It also demonstrates the delicate balance between plants and animal life.”
At Aquarium Pyramid visitors are able to view sharks, sea turtles, eels, tropical fish and more overhead as they walk through an underground tunnel completely surrounded by 1 million gallons of water.
Interactive theaters top off the attractions, including an IMAX theater; Ridefilm, where each 18-passenger ride is surrounded by a wraparound screen; and a 4D Special FX Theater, where wind, smoke, leg ticklers and seat buzzers are part of the action. This summer’s 4D flick will feature Pokémon.
