Pasquale Scaturro is not your average geologist. Even though he has a courageous sense of adventure as a modern-day Meriwether Lewis, he lacks the gift for exhilarating voiceover narration. Scaturro’s journey to lead the first team to navigate the entire 3,000 miles of the Nile River is chronicled in the large-format film “Mystery of the Nile.”

“Mystery of the Nile” delivers breath-taking panoramic views of unchartered Africa as well as footage of some of the oldest churches, temples and relics on the Nile’s shores. However, despite providing an education into the importance of the Nile to historical and present day civilizations, “Mystery of the Nile” is first and foremost a gripping adventure film.

Navigating the Nile is not as easy as kicking back in a raft and soaking up the desert sun. Scaturro and his novice team of intellectual raft mates face the conventional dangers of twisting rapids, deadly waterfalls and hungry crocodiles. They also face some unusual obstacles, such as gun-toting Ethiopian thieves and malaria.

The film is an interesting mix of education, scenery and suspense providing the audience with more than just the random facts of traditional documentaries. It will enlighten while sometimes leaving you on the edge of your seat.

“Mystery of the Nile” is playing through July in the ExxonMobil Space Theater at the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium in downtown Baton Rouge. The film’s running time is 50 minutes.
