“What happens in Vegas” surprisingly delightful

Las Vegas is a city with a lot of glitz and sparkles. It’s a place where people lose their life savings and are driven to the brink of insanity watching magic shows and Wayne Newton performances. “What happens in Vegas” is very similar to the city itself. Despite all of its flaws, you will enjoy yourself -- at least for a little while.
Jack(Ashton Kutcher)and Joy(Cameron Diaz) are two down on their luck New Yorkers looking for some fun and relaxation in Sin City. In a drunken stupor, the pair get married and before a divorce can take place, they win a three million dollar jackpot.
Soon, Jack and Joy decide they hate each other, but the honorable Judge Whopper, played by Dennis Miller, forces them to try to make their marriage work or forfeit all the funds.
What I found surprising was that movies of this sort have little or no appeal to me, yet I laughed and enjoyed the experience of sitting through it.
With that said, there were still some things that bothered me. Not only is it another romantic comedy set in Las Vegas, but a judge forcing two people to live together or lose three million dollars seems less believable than “Lord of the Rings.”
It also didn’t help that, at times, the film gets pretty corny and Diaz and Kutcher don’t exactly play off each other well.
On the bright side, the supporting cast is strong and really carries the film to a level of decency. The best friends of the bride and groom are played by Rob Corddry and Lake Bell, and while their characters received the funniest lines, their hatred for one another brings about a multitude of laugh-out-loud moments.
Watching these four characters try to make each others lives miserable for an hour an a half was actually pretty funny and worth the price of admission.
“What happens in Vegas” may not be the best movie ever made about couples in Sin City, but there is enough good acting and humorous moments to sustain an acceptable romantic comedy.
