Kate finds herself relying on Angie Ostrowiski (Amy Poehler), a south Philly girl whose common-law husband, Carl (Dax Shepard), wants to use surrogacy to make a quick buck. Kate and Angie couldn’t be more opposite, but when Kate finds Angie on her doorstep with no place to live, she takes her in and the hilarity ensues as they prepare for the baby.
Even though Poehler has been seen in film before, she does quite well in the lead role. Her over-the-top quirky comedy makes this movie enjoyable as she delivers her lines like a true comedienne.
Fey has also finally made it to the big screen after achieving television success. Although her corporate businesswoman role in “Baby Mama” is similar to her “30 Rock” character, she still brings both charm and wit to the big screen.
Fey has successfully broken into the film industry with this one.
Fey and Poehler aren’t the only former Saturday Night Live staples to make an appearance in “Baby Mama.” Steve Martin plays Kate’s boss, Barry. His green, organic-loving New Age character could have been way over the top, but he puts a great spin on it. I was surprised to find him in this role, but I loved every minute of it.
As to the writing, the one-liners and unusual situations are funny, but with this film, what you see is what you get. Most of the really funny situations and lines you can catch in the trailers.
That’s not to say that the writing was terrible. The film was fairly good and definitely enjoyable.
It was refreshing to see a comedy featuring two women who weren’t out searching for a man (although they did find them). Fey and Poehler’s interactions in the apartment reminded me of the “Odd Couple.” In fact, it’s their crazy living arrangement that instigated most of the laughs. With that said, some of the plot was still predictable. Even a few of the unexpected twists still led you to guess what would happen in the end.
Overall, “Baby Mama” isn’t the greatest comedy, but it will make you laugh. This film may never be nominated for any awards, but I would definitely see it in the theater again.
