Your mind can cause you to block out some pretty horrible things in your life. This is the lesson six childhood friends learn when they come together over a fellow friend’s death in “Crazy Eights.” The dead friend’s last wish was that the group unite and locate a time capsule they buried more 20 twenty years earlier.
As children, the seven friends were known as the “Crazy Eights.” Although their past was hazy, they all knew they had this bond.
After finding the time capsule, their memories begin to become clearer. A shocking find leads them to a strange house, but as time passes, they realize the house isn’t completely unfamiliar to them. In fact, it is the house in which they all grew up.
Moreover, they begin to remember that there weren’t always just seven of them. There was also Karen, who happens to be part of the memory they have all blocked out.
“Crazy Eights” is more of a psychological thriller than an all-out fright fest, but it does have its fare share of scary scenes. Almost all of the scary sequences left the audience using their imagination. You never really see anyone getting attacked, and I believe this is the movie’s strong suit.
You know what ends up happening, but the producers leave you to picture how it happens.
I expected the acting to be pretty horrible, and I was not disappointed. However, I did find the performances to be rather funny. It was like they knew how bad they were, and they were OK with it.
My favorite scene involved Brent Sykes (Frank Whaley). It is right after the characters begin to realize what is happening, and he decides to get out of this house. He leaves the group behind, gets lost and spends most of his time in one room. I don’t know if it was the camera angle or the general feel of the scene, but I couldn’t forget how much it looked like one of the old anti-drug PSAs.
Another thing I enjoyed about the movie was the edgy way it was shot. It was both dark and intriguing. This definitely added to its “creepiness” factor. There were moments in this film that actually gave me chills.
Overall, if you are looking for an OK horror movie, I would suggest that you check out “Crazy Eights.” It has a good mixture of scary scenes and blood, while the acting is humorous and overly exaggerated.
