The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will make it’s 100th appearance Saturday, July 11, in the only place that seems appropriate -- Las Vegas, Nev. The UFC has not only thrived since its inception, it has become the fastest growing sport in the world. Even though it’s been a long, hard road to the top, according to Dana White, they are just getting started.
After placing second only to the Rolling Stones in Pay-Per-View sales in 2007, the company has continued to grow. UFC 100 marks the 100th Ultimate Fighting Championship fight and does not include the Ultimate Fight Nights or “The Ultimate Fighter” shows.
UFC 100 will include two title bouts and another match that could easily be a main event on just about any other card.
Main Event:
Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir
Heavyweight Title Fight
Brock Lesnar -- Webster, S.D., 6-3, 265 pound, 3-1 (Heavyweight Champion)
Frank Mir -- Las Vegas, Nev., 6-3, 240 pounds, 12-3 (Interim Heavyweight Champion)
If Brock Lesnar defeats Frank Mir, Mir will be the second Heavyweight Champion he has defeated. With a win, Lesnar’s record will be an unimpressive 4-1, until you look at the groundwork he has created to be in this position.
He broke longtime mixed martial arts (MMA) journeyman, Heath Herring’s face and defeated Hall of Famer Randy “The Natural” Couture through a technical knockout (TKO). If he does come out with the win, there will be no argument that he has earned his Heavyweight title.
Mir by Submission (Armbar) in the First Round
Co-Main Event:
George “Rush” St. Pierre vs. Thiago “Pit Bull” Alves
George St. Pierre -- Montreal, Quebec, Canada 5-10, 170 pounds, 18-2 (Welterweight Champion)
Thiago Alves --Coconut Creek, Fla., 5-9, 170 pounds, 22-4
