The UFC ended the year with new light heavyweight and interim heavyweight champions while a legend in the sport was destroyed for the very first time. Wanderlei Silva was unable to complete his trilogy over Quinton Jackson, while Cheick Kongo solidified himself as an elite heavyweight in the UFC. As always the whole card was a great show with all three main fights living up to the hype. It was a night filled with knockouts, only two decisions and no submissions.

Local New Orleans native and LSU alumni Pat Barry won his UFC debut by TKO in the First Round. In four professional fights Barry has yet to let a fighter out of the First Round.

Main Event:

Forrest Griffin vs. Rashad “Sugar” Evans

For the third time in 2008, the UFC has a new light heavyweight champion. Rashad Evans, winner of Season 2 of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality show, defeated the winner of Season 1, Forrest Griffin, by TKO in the third round. It was the first time that two TUF winners faced off for a championship belt.

Evans has relished in the underdog role, proving me and just about everyone in the MMA world, including Dana White, wrong. Evans has gotten remarkably better and has moved his record to an extremely impressive 17-0-1. As time goes on, Evans appears to be more and more unstoppable.

Main Card:

Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira vs. Frank Mir

Frank Mir became the first man ever to finish Antonio Nogueira in a fight. This is something that heavyweight journeyman Heath Herring could not do in three attempts against Nogueira and something that Mir himself had a hard time believing was possible. It was a historic and very dominating win for Mir, who knocked down Nogueira three times in just over two rounds. Mir is now the new interim heavyweight champion and will face Brock Lesnar for the second time to unify the heavyweight championship belt.
