On Friday, Nov. 21, 30 mixed martial arts fighters from across Louisiana and Texas will put their talents on display at Chevy’s night club in Hammond. There will be a total of 15 fights in all, with a mix of amateur and pro bouts.
Gracie-Barra’s gym will be there in impressive fashion with half the fight card in their name. Gracie-Barra has seven gyms, four in south Louisiana, two in Mississippi and one in Georgia. They have a total of approximately 400 students, with 15 of them on showcase Friday night.
One of Gracie-Barra’s fighters, Nunzio Camarata, will face Brian Torzewski of team Anaconda from New Orleans for the Global-Nutrition heavyweight title belt. This will be a pro bout and the main event of the evening.
Some other notable fighters include Norman Bonck, Kurt Holobaugh and Brad Patti. All three are from Gracie-Barra’s gym and will bring an undefeated record to the ring. Holobaugh showed some impressive jiu-jitsu while winning his last fight by submission (triangle choke). Bonck also proved that he has a great ground game by winning by submission (armbar) in his last fight. Patti is coming off a split decision victory over Andrew Vu.
Two undefeated fighters -- Scott Smith of Gracie-Barra and Sean Baudier, teammate of state champion Joseph Abercrombie of Golden Dragon Gym in Texas -- are also the early picks for the “Fight of the Night” award.
