Tickets are on sale for Chinese Culture Night, set for 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at Independence Park Theatre, 7800 Independence Blvd.

The evening will feature the Baton Rouge Yang Guang dance troupe Xiaomei Seal in a night of Chinese folk arts. Along with folk dancers will be a professional violinist and world-class Chinese martial arts performed by ethnic Chinese artists trained in art institutions in China.

The troupe have been active in the greater Baton Rouge area for the past five years. They have performed at many cultural events, including the 2008 Louisiana World Cultural Economic Forum.

The dancers have expanded their repertoire with more traditional Chinese dances specifically for this event. Some of the dances in the program can be traced back to the stone ages.

LSU Professor of Violin Lin He will perform Chinese folk music. He was the featured soloist at the opening performance of Louisiana Sinfonietta’s 2009-2010 concert season.

This is the first time that He will perform traditional Chinese music in Baton Rouge.

The Chinese martial arts performance will be led by Master Yajun “Thomas” Zhuang.

Zhuang is one of China’s top martial artists. He began full-time Chinese martial arts training at age 8 and has been active in martial arts teaching, training, competition and research for more than 25 years. Zhuang joined the LSU faculty in 2006.
